マンデラに学び、今こそinvictus（負けざる者）を読む

今、月刊誌『英語教育』に連載中のコラム「アフリカの中の英語」
の記事を書こうとして、期せずして、今号で書こうとしていたのが
その詩と南アフリカのマンデラ元大統領についてであったことに
気づいた。
1960年代から1989年まで、気の遠くなるような年月、終わる
とも思えない無人島での拘留の日々を、マンデラ元大統領は、
希望を失わず、次の詩を胸に、生き続けたという。
19世紀末の詩人・William Ernest Henleyの詩。結核によって
障害を負い、大きな挫折と苦しみを抱えながらも、詩の創造によっ
て自分を支え、周りを支えたＨｅｎley。この詩は、invictus（負けざ
る者）と呼ばれ、時を超え、国境を超え、人種を超え、人々の支えと
なってきた。
「 I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.（どんな神かは分からないけれ
ど、私は感謝する。このもぎ取られることのない魂のために）
「my head is bloody, but unbowed.]
（私の頭は血だらけだけれど、お辞儀をするわけではない）
「I am the master of my fate　I am the captain of my
soul　（私は私の運命の主人。私は私の魂の指導者）」

訳があまり良くないのですが、この詩がなぜ「負けざる者」なのか
是非考えてみていただければと思います。絶望の中の不屈の精
神。被災したわけではない我々が、途方に暮れている場合ではな
い。そして、今辛い状況にいるみなさんには、是非声を出して読ん
でみてください。

Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.
